Barbara Kahn

Barbara Kahn is the George R. Minot Professor of Medicine at Harvard Medical School, Chief of the Endocrinology, Diabetes and Metabolism Division at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center (BIDMC), and an associate member at the Broad Institute. Her lab investigates the molecular mechanisms for insulin resistance in obesity and type 2 diabetes and the molecular pathogenesis of obesity. Specific research areas include: 1) discovery of novel genes involved in insulin resistance and the regulation of adiposity; 2) novel signaling pathways for leptin action with a focus on the AMP-activated protein kinase pathway; 3) role of protein tyrosine phosphatases in the pathogenesis of insulin resistance and the regulation of adiposity; and 4) retinol binding protein 4, insulin resistance and the metabolic syndrome in humans and rodents.
